According to US Soccer's Twitter page,as of now, USMNT is still planning to go to Egypt for Feb. 9 friendly in Cairo. U.S. Soccer is closely monitoring events in Egypt. Going to Cairo is NOT a good idea, as anyone who has not been under a rock knows. Egypt is dangerously unstable right now, given the political troubles that have engulfed the country in the last week or so.
As far as options about what to do with this match, I have been looking at a map of the middle east. If US Soccer and the Egyptian Football Federation are not able to re-schedule the match, perhaps it could be moved to Al Aqabah, Jordan, or Riyadh, Saudi Arabia? Failing that, I believe a postponement would be the best option, as, let's face it, if you are the Los Angeles Galaxy, would you want Landon Donovan going into that tinderbox?, especially considering the fact that the U.S. State Department has issued a travel advisory telling American citizens to get out of Egypt A.S.A.P.
Further, if the match were postponed, say a month or two, the political situation may well have been resolved one way or another, that could make travel for Americans in that region MUCH safer.
Yesterday was All-Star game day in both The NFL and the NHL. Both games were not terribly memorable. The NHL game devolved into it's usual goalfest, as the "Team Lidstrom" defeated "Team Staal" 11-10 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the NFC defeated the AFC 55-41, in the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl in Honolulu. Both games were totally irrelevant, and made a case for those who would abolish those games.
